and then there were 3
A great day at sioux center for us to host districts. We had 8 guys come in and wrestle hard. Trey had a tough first round match up with the number 4 ranked kid, he gave quite a battle but fell just short, he came back to win the third place match but fell short in a wrestle back. Seaton had a great first round match and found himself in the final where he beat Alex Rust for the 7th time this season and qualifying for the first time. Augie took advantage of a renewed aggression and won by tech over a kid from Alta before falling to Utesch from Akron again. He won his wrestle back and qualified for the 4th time. Pedro had a tough day, after winning his first match he fell in the finals by fall and was caught in the wrestle back and pinned as well. Kyle battled well for a kid with pneumonia. he lost his first match by tech fall but came back and won a hard fought battle before falling in a wrestle back. Curtis had a great first round winning 5-0 and then got some revenge by beating Jacob Lenhoff 5-0 in the finals qualifying for the first time. Gabe had a tough day, he had a great shot in the first match that was countered and he was put to his back. His second match the same thing happened. Gabe had a great season and some great improvement, he is so close to being a great wrestler. Matt had a rough day, falling in the first match in the final seconds, only to fall in the second match in a back and forth throwers matchup, he finished the season 29-6

Sectional Champs!
Wow, Saturday was a great day of wrestling for us. We wrestled well in the early rounds and placed four guys into the finals.
Trey knocked off the central lyon kid and held on for a 2nd place finish
Seaton knocked off an HMS kid and then beat alex Rust for the 6th time this year to finish 1st
Augie, knocked off an HMS kid before falling to an Akron kid and winning the wrestle back against Cole Zimbelman of Central lyon
Pedro had an awesome day, he knocked off the number 2 seed who he had lost to 4 times this year, He fell in the finals to an Okoboji kid but finished 2nd
Kyle had a steller day, making it to the finals, then losing a hard fought battle with a West Lyon kid, in the wrestle back he dominated majoring his Akron opponent 9-0 for a 2nd place finish
Thomas had a tough day, after a bye in the first round, he suffered a lost to a George Little Rock wrestler, he fought back and won a great match for 3rd
Curtis wrestled well making it to the finals and winning late over an HMS kid he had lost to at conference just Tuesday night for a 1st place finish
Jason, was sick! you could tell by his body language, after a tough loss in the semifinals he found himself in the 3rd and 4th place match, he wrestled tough, but the strength was not there, falling in that match to finish 4th
Gabe wrestled amazing today, we saw a physical side of Gabe that does not come out often, in a tough match in the semis, he was trailing when he found a headlock and got the pin over a kid he had lost to twice this season, he fell in the finals in another good match for a 2nd place finish
Sean had the toughest weight class all day and did not get a fovorable first round match, he fell to Dylan Reynolds in the first round and fell to a W. Lyon kid in the second round and did not place
Trevor wrestled well after a 1st round bye, he lost a hard fought semifinal to a west sioux kid he has always had trouble with, he fought back hard and came out in 3rd
Mark had another tough day but we are always seeing improvements on his feet and on the mat he fell 0-2 on the day and did not place
215 Smolders cruised into the finals but fell short to the W. Lyon kid he beat the other day at conferecne. It was a hard fought match but he fell 4-0
Dago gave it a go today, but his knee and illness just wouldn't let him wrestle the matches he wanted, he fell to Noble of HMS in the first round before injury defaulting his last match

Oh so close
Tuesday night brought us to MOC/FV for the conference championships. A great effort was put forth by all the guys. Seaton and Augie were both crowned as champions, it was Augie's fourth while seaton collected his second. Kyle Donlin fell in the finals 2-0 in a hard fought match, while Curtis Hayes also fell 4-2 to Jim Finch, who we will see at the sectional this weekend. Almost everyone on the backside did what they needed to do, a number of guys fighting back to get to third place that list includes, Trey, Pedro, Thomas, Gabe, Trevor and Matt. With Dago out and Colton still out of the lineup, we fell just 2 1/2 points short of a conference championship. We were oh so close, a couple of pins or wins in other spots could have gotten us the hardware. We are very happy with the second place finish and very proud of the way we wrestled. We look forward on building towards this weekend as the sectionals are at Central Lyon Saturday morning.

I have not updated in a very long time, it has been a crazy season with a lot of ups and downs. we are currently 25-7 as a team and have 2 guys ranked in the top 10 in there weight class. We are hoping to avenge one of our losses this weekend as we host the sioux center duals on Saturday. We finished the conference season in 3rd place after a slip up just before christmas that saw us fall to HMS. We avenged that loss this past Saturday by winning the HMS tournament over the host hawks 39-30.
Things are looking really good as we head towards the end of the season, we are only out one wrestler because of injury, Dago is toughing it out with his knee and hopes to go deep into the tournament this year. We did take a big hit with Colton being out for the year with a dislocated and broken finger that needed to have pins put in it to repair it, hopefully we will be able to have him back if the team goes deep this year. The sectional looks really good for a lot of guys, we could qualify up to 11 guys for districts which would an amazing number for us and would be a huge lift becasue we host districts the following week. As a team we should be able to win the sectional title for the first time in sioux center history, we would then move on to wrestle for the chance to go to team state, also a first for the school. I will update after this weekend and let everyone know how we do during the post season.

Western Christian Tournament
The Western tournament is usually quite a weak tournament save us and Hartley Melvin Sanborn. Thursday we were getting updates all night as to the score between Sibley and HMS, it was a close dual and with a couple guys out this week, we knew we were in trouble. We started off the day versus West Sioux, a team very down after having three state qualifiers leave after their senior season. The final was 62-18. Next was Sioux Central, this is also a team down on numbers and athletes, the final was 56-24. Next was the big match that everyone knew was for the championship. Hartley came out strong in their 4th dual of the day and took the early lead. However a late surge, started by Matt Smolders first period pin at 215 led the warriors back and a pin by Augie Martinez put it away with a final of 42-37. We hope to have some of our injured wrestlers back this week as we see Hartley and Okoboji on Thursday night for our second set of conference duals
MOC and George Little Rock
The first conference duals of the year brought us to Orange City Iowa. With a couple of starters out, we knew that it could be a tough night. We didn't wrestle well but came out on top of George Little Rock by the final of 62-18. George is a team that is very down in numbers and really lacks the athletes to put together a very good team. They are making strides but only really had 3 good wrestlers. MOC was the dual that we really needed to win. MOC is always a rivalry and wrestling was pinned this year as the the only team to beat them so far. after a tough fought dual we came out on top with 42 to 31 win. Once again we did not wrestle well giving up positions and not wrestling well in others. We look to have some guys back from injury by the 18th

Sgt. Bluff update
This past weekend we kicked off the season with our first dual tournament. This is usually a very tough tournament with some very quality opponents. The guys came out firing on all cylinders Friday night, taking down Akron Westfield by the score of 58-12, later that night we took out Kingsley Pierson by the score of 56-15. This was a great start to the tournament and the guys looked very good. Saturday morning we came back to finish out the tournament, We started with a team that is rebuilding in Hinton. Hinton is under the direction of a new coach this year and lost 3 state qualifiers from last year, the guys did not let down the pressure and pounded Hinton 81-0, this was the highest point total in Sioux Center history! The last dual of the pool rounds would put SC versus Woodbury Central. Woodbury is usually a quite powerful team and we knew that it would come down to us versus them for the winner of the pool. We figured that the match would come down to two key match ups, one at 125 and one at 215. At 125 Augie pinned the #9 ranked wrestler while at 215 Matt Smolders pinned the #7 ranked wrestler in the 1st period. These two wins would lead us to a big win over Woodbury by the final of 49-21. The winner of Pool A was Sgt. Bluff. The match would come down to the final few matches but we were unable to pull out the win and dropped a 40-39 decision to the tournament host for a second place finish.
A couple of guys had a really great tournament. Mario Ruiz had a great weekend in his varsity debut, going 4-1 Seaton, wrestling up a weight class was a perfect 5-0. Augie also finish 5-0 with two impressive wins. Pedro was 3-2 on the weekend and put up a great battle with a returning state qualifier. Thomas was 4-1, Curtis was 5-0 with 5 pins. Felipe Felipe wrestled 145 this weekend and was 2-3. a big surprise on the weekend was Gabe Doornink who pulled out two impressive pins and went 2-2 on the weekend. Colton was 5-0 with 5 pins and was not really even tested. Trevor was 3-2. At 189 Mark picked up his first win and Sean Robinson came in against Woodbury Central to collect a big win. Matt Smolders was 5-0 with 4 pins and a void. Dago reinjured his knee and sat out after his first match for precautionary reasons. bringing in Trevor VandeWeerd who picked up his first varsity win. All in all a very good start to the season, still some positions we can improve on but we looked to be ahead of the competion.
